Moving Checklist: Your Essential Timeline for a Smooth Relocation
Relocating can be one of life's most stressful events, but with a clear plan, you can make the process seamless and exciting. As your guide through this transition, we’ve broken down your move into manageable steps. Follow this comprehensive timeline to ensure every detail is covered for a stress-free move into your new home!
4-6 Weeks Before: The Planning & Preparation Phase
This is the time for major decisions and groundwork. Focus on logistics, vetting professionals, and getting organized.
Declutter, Discard & Donate: Less to move equals less cost and stress. Be ruthless!
Collect Quotes & Choose a Mover: Get estimates from multiple moving companies. Once you’ve made your choice, sign the contract promptly to secure your date.
Create Your Move File: Start a dedicated folder (physical or digital) for all moving-related papers, contracts, and receipts.
Insure Your Belongings: Contact your homeowner's insurance agent to discuss coverage for your items during the move. Simultaneously, contact insurance companies to arrange for coverage at your new address.
Plan Your New Life: Start locating essential services like schools and healthcare providers in your new community.
Secure Off-Site Storage: If you need to store items temporarily, secure a storage unit now.
3-4 Weeks Before: Notify & Transfer
Communication is key this month. You need to tell the world you’re moving and ensure your new home is ready for you.
Handle Utilities & Home Services: Contact utility companies (Electric, Water, Sewer, Gas, Internet, TV) to schedule the discontinuation and transfer of services at both your old and new homes.
Change Your Address: Notify everyone about your upcoming move. This includes:
Banks & Post Office (essential for mail forwarding)
Credit Card Companies
Insurance Providers
Lawyer & Financial Advisor
Magazine Subscriptions
Family & Friends
Finalize Services: Make sure all utility transfer dates align perfectly with your move-in and move-out schedule.
2-3 Weeks Before: Logistics & Home Prep
The countdown is on! This stage focuses on wrapping up local responsibilities and ensuring moving day is hassle-free.
Notify the Authorities: Notify the DMV of your new address.
Account Management: Close or open local bank accounts as needed for your new location.
Cancel Home Services: Discontinue any recurring home services, such as a housekeeper, gardener, or lawn service.
Eat Down the Pantry: Start using up perishable items and frozen foods that you can't transport.
Arrange Care: Secure child and pet care for moving day—you'll want them safe and out of the way while the heavy lifting is happening.
Alert the HOA: If applicable, notify your Homeowners Association (HOA) about your move date and reserve elevator usage if you live in a multi-unit building.
1 Week Before: Final Countdown
The finish line is in sight. Focus on packing essentials and confirming every detail.
Confirm & Review: Confirm final arrangements with your moving company and review your moving-day plan with them.
Prep Your Companions: Arrange specific transportation for your pets and plants.
The Essentials Box: Pack an essentials box with necessities (toiletries, medications, tools, a few dishes, chargers) that you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new home.
Document Everything: Take a picture in your home (especially if you are renting) to document its condition before you leave.
Label Like a Pro: Label every moving box clearly with its contents and the room it should go into.
We are here to help you navigate your journey every step of the way. By following this timeline, you can look forward to a smooth transition and settling into your new home with ease!
